Flying into Thailand can often mean a stopover in Bangkok. Renowned as a busy, lively place, Bangkok can be an assault on the senses somewhat. However, it offers some great experiences for visitors staying there for short periods of time.

The city is a great place for back packers on a lower budget and has an array of fun things to get involved in.
Travellers on a budget looking for fun would be well advised to stay on Khao San Road in the centre of Bangkok. The area is generally full of other tourists all looking for the wild Bangkok lifestyle and has a selection of pubs to quench thirsts. Drinking is also done on the street, with tourist purchasing drinks, including the Thai Red Bull laced Thai Bucket cocktail from street vendors.

It’s also has a large market area running along the length of the street, where you can enjoy bartering for all sorts of goods – from the bizarre to the useful – as well as the chance to purchase food from street vendors. The area is a glitzy, neon filled haven for those looking for some for some cheap thrills

While near Khao San Road an interesting place to visit is the National Muai Thai Arena to go watch the National Sport – Thai Kickboxing. Entry is about 1,000 Baht, however for cheaper tickets eat in a restaurant close to the arena and ask the Thai owner to buy tickets in exchange for your custom. They generally oblige and the tickets can be quarter the price.

The sport itself is great to watch, prepare to be amazed at the stamina, power and ability of the athletes of varying sizes. If you want some thrills before you get there, take a tuk-tuk to the stadium

Another thing Thai folk do well is food. Thai food is celebrated for its flavours. From the cooling taste of lemongrass to the fiery chilli, Thai food is a whirlwind of flavours. Bangkok is full of street vendors who sell some of the tastiest, rustic food you’re going to come across in the city.

In Bangkok it is not uncommon to be met with the phrase, “Gin khao ru yang?” (Have you eaten?). Not meant to be taken literally, the phrase is used as a general greeting – a great example of the emphasis on food by Thai people.

Though if you want the benefit of tasty Thai food at home, why not take a cooking class while you’re staying over in Bangkok. Food classes in the city are commonly available for those wishing to learn the culinary secrets of the Thais. Classes usually involve buying food with the lecturer, preparation of vegetables, cooking demonstrations and instructions and then the moment of glory – eating the food. Some of the classes take place in outdoor orchards and kitchens allowing you to pick fruit and herbs from the surrounding area to include in your food.

For a pensive activity that allows you to get away from the frantic city, why not visit a Buddhist temple. Bangkok is scattered with temples, some larger than others. One of the most famous is The Golden Mount (Wat Saket) – offering beautiful views and tranquillity.
Another Temple worth a visit is The Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Pho) – which has the infamous giant reclining statue of Buddha.

Thailand certainly offers plenty of varied activities for a short stay and can be a very enjoyable city once you decide on what you want to do while visiting.

  1. Would liek to add that for food, Siam Paragon is a must do eating location. It’s one of the finest(air-conditioned) food meccas. Take your time wandering the first-floor food court and the adjoining stalls and restaurants – there’s no shortage of choice. After you’ve eaten your fill, browse the bountiful Gourmet Food Market and pick up some snacks or culinary souvenirs, then shop the department stores upstairs.
