The Haiti Earthquake – Already Jumped On By Scammers
Everybody probably knows about the horrific Haiti earthquake that happened on Tuesday (12/1/10), which has affected up to 3 million people with 100,000 people feared dead. Well it hasn’t taken long for the scammers to try and make money off the back of it with dodgy donation sites. According to the FBI here a lot of sites have been set up very recently trying to get people to donate money but the sites do not work for any recognized charity and the money is being pocketed by scammers. They are also using videos on the site with plug ins that will install malware onto a users computer.
So this is just warning to anyone who wants to donate to the Haiti appeal, please do it through a recognised charity to make sure your contribution helps!
If you are in the UK you can use the Oxfam donate Haiti earthquake page or the British Red Cross site
Or alternatively if you are in America they have set up a very good and quick, easy way of donating via a text message. Just text HAITI to 90999 and you will automatically donate $10 to the US Red Cross through your phone bill, you can also donate $5 to Wyclef Jeans charity (Yele Haiti) by texting Yele to 501501.
