The Copenhagen Climate Change Conference

With only 9 days left until the climate change Copenhagen conferences are all go, the Danes have revealed a massive win and shows why they are the ideal place to hold talks about the effects of climate change and how everyone should come up with a deal to try and sort it.

A little island called Samso has become a completely self sufficient community after a decade long battle to become the first industrialised place to be totally energy self sufficient. It is a major coup for Denmark and I’m sure it will be a big talking point come the conference, delegates will even be flown or ferried (flying sounds a great way to travel to a climate change conference…) to the island to see it for themselves and see just how well it works.

The independent article that reported this island says about how most of the residents were actually quite sceptical about green power and it wasn’t an island of ‘hippies’ before it all started. But the community was in crisis after the biggest business closed down leaving many without jobs. The farmer behind trying to make the self sufficient haven, Soren Hermansen, said “A crisis makes people much more open to new ideas.” and thought this would be the perfect solution.

Well I say congratulations to them and I hope they can carry on and teach everyone else how to go about being the same.
