The Car Hire Scam

Now if you’re like me then you probably think The Hustle on BBC1 is an amazing program that is kind of like a slightly less Hollywood Oceans 11 series. Unfortunately it is a relatively short series only running to something silly like 6 episodes a season so when that is finished I have to make do with The Real Hustle, which is another BBC show that does The Hustle’s scams in real life to the ordinary  public (don’t worry they give back the things they steal…probably)

One I saw the other day was ‘The Car Hire Scam’ where they dupe unlucky car buyers into putting a deposit on a car that is actually a hire car and is definitely not for sale! Like they always say its all about the confidence and in this case a half decent blonde will probably help as well…

They quite often do a series of The Real Hustle Abroad as well because they like to show how stupid people become when they are on holiday, all normal rules seem to go out the window when a bit of sunshine appears!

I saw one scam where they were stealing hire cars in Alicante or somewhere similar but instead of breaking in they would just persuade the owners to give them the keys! I can’t remember exactly and I can’t find a clip on Youtube (if you know the one I mean and have a video post it up in the comments!) but I seem to remember them pretending to help some tourists who’s car had a brake leak (that the hustlers had done) and persuading them to drop it off outside a local garage that had another one of the hustlers waiting to simply drive off once the tourists had left him the keys to fix it.

The garage wasn’t even open at that time though and the hustler was nothing to do with the garage, he was just conveniently waiting outside in overalls. So when the tourists went to pick up their fixed car a few hours later the now open garage had no idea what they were on about!
