Space Chair

Space Chair is a new advert by Toshiba and it is the worlds highest commercial being shot at 98,000 feet above the Earth! It is not, as I first thought, a furniture advert for sofas and chairs but it is actually advertising a new Toshiba LCD TV. The premise being that the ordinary chair in the advert is transported to the outer realms of Earth before dropping back again and this is what it is like to watch this supposedly magnificent TV. Now I’m not sure I really want to go into space every time I try and watch Eastenders but the advert is pretty spectacular.

The making of video is also pretty interesting and worth a watch.

It certainly is the first time a household piece of furniture has been taken into space by a big balloon, that I know of, but the chair was not very ordinary costing a whopping £2.5k to make because it was made using biodegradable balsa wood to keep the weight down. The Toshiba camera used combined with the balloon and the chair had too meet FAA regulations that required the complete set up to weigh less than 4 lbs. That is an incredibly light chair!
At just over 50,000 ft the temperature dropped to minus 90 degrees and after 83 minutes of travelling upwards the chair finally reached its peak altitude of 98,268 feet and broke up and started the 24 minute drop back to terra firma, where the Toshiba team located the camera and the recordings on its SD card using a GPS signal.
