Pirates Will Be Disconnected
After months of talking and speculation Peter Mandelson has officially announced that persistent file sharers will be cut off from the internet after two warning letters if they continue to share illegally.
This will not be easy to enforce however and like many others I think it is a ridiculous idea that will never work. How will they go about doing it and how do they propose to uphold it? If I am in a house with 5 people using computers and one of them gets kicked off the net what about the 4 other people? I’m pretty sure that would be a collective punishment and that just ain’t right…
These days the net is everywhere and pretty much obtainable for anyone if they want it. Sure they could stop your home broadband connection but what happens if that person has a phone with 3G, or they go to work where they have a computer, or they go to a shop/cafe that has free Wi-Fi. Not to mention the fact you can get mobile broadband! Pay as you go means no contracts so how do you kick someone off of something when they dont have a contract?!
It is not just the public who are against the idea, mobile broadband providers Talk Talk recently said how stupid the idea is and how it will just lead to massive amount of Wi-Fi theft. They then went to a housing estate with a laptop and showed just how many sources of Wi-Fi they could steal as a publicity stunt.
The MI5 have even said it is a bad idea….
Oh yeah did I mention this year has been a record breaking year for Singles Sales?
