Optical Illusion For Slower Drivers
The District of West Vancouver has thought of a new way to try and cut peoples speeds on dangerous roads in the area. In a joint project with the BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation they have created an optical illusion that should make motorists think twice before speeding.
The illusion makes drivers think there is a little girl chasing a ball in the middle of the road and there have been signs placed on the lead up to the illusion that say “you’re probably not expecting kids to run out on the road” that should help to warn drivers of the fake danger ahead.
When I first saw this video floating around the Internet a lot of people said that this was an accident waiting to happen and that people would see the girl in the road think it was a real girl and skid and cause a pile up or swerve and hit an actual kid on the pavement. A lot of people also said this would be a bad idea for the District of West Vancouver because if anyone did hurt themselves due to the illusion then they could be be in trouble with personal injury solicitors like Access Legal who would help out the injured.
However it would appear that this was the usual Internet going mad over nothing scenario because the installation was carefully tested before being put into place and while it was in use it was constantly monitored to ensure pedestrian and drivers were safe. The illusion rises up gradually from about 100 feet away so it will not surprise drivers and it fades away as the driver gets right up to it.
So what do you think of the illusion? Useful or a cause of danger in itself?
