One Persons Experience Of The Indonesian Earthquake
I just finished reading an article by Fiona MacGregor on The Telegraph.co.uk and I have to say I’m a little bit stunned. Its her story of being in the deadly Indonesia earthquake. As well as being a very good read it really brings home the devastation that natural disasters have on people and places. Being from the UK it’s easy to forget how bad some places have it, we complain about the rain all the time and we do have terrible floods but generally speaking we have an OK time of things compared to a lot of places.
Here is a particularly dramatic extract
Within minutes her house – and the five around it – were entirely consumed by the blaze. The desperate efforts of neighbours to quench the flames with stinking sewage water from the wide open gutters did not help. As the quake continued I sat down on the road, reckoning that was better than falling over. The ground beneath me rose perhaps a foot, then down again, and bucked again and again. Motorbikes slid uncontrollably across the road while a streetside vendor desperately tried to control his stall on wheels as it veered around the road with its pots of boiling water and oil.
