The mention of Stuttgart automatically conjures up images from its industrial heritage, after all this is the home of Porsche, Benz and Mercedes. However, visitors to this enchanting city in the shadows of the Black Forest will be surprised to find that it has a long history of viniculture stretching back over 1000 years and more than 400 cultivated acres, many within the confines of the city.

The city is surrounded by rolling green hills, carved up by the River Neckar and along with its rich soil and warm summer climate it makes the perfect environment for growing grapes.

While most of German’s production is associated with white wine, the Wurttemberg region begs to differ, supplying 70% red wine from its vineyards along the banks of the River Neckar. The most common red grapes grown in Stuttgart’s vineyards are Trollinger, Lemberger and Pinot Noir, along with white varieties of Riesling, Pino Gris and Traminer.

Festival of wine

Stuttgart Wine Village opens every year between August and September for a 12 day wine spectacular, which is one of the largest such festivals in Germany. In the Market Square, Schillerplatz and the length of Kirchestrasse there are as many as 120 decorated stalls with 500 varieties of wine for enthusiasts to sample. A popular event during the festivities is the “Viertele zu schlotzen”, which involves downing a quarter litre of wine. There is plenty of wine related entertainment and lots to eat and drink during this well-liked Stuttgart event.

Wine Museum

Weinbaumuseum, Viniculture Museum in Uhlbach, Stuttgart has been recently renovated and tells the long and illustrious tale of wine production in Germany. The exhibits trace the story from its Roman beginnings to the present day and include displays of many ancient tools and barrels. There is also a working cooperage where visitors can watch the craftsmen manufacture barrels in the time-honoured fashion.

Wine Tours

Weinwanderwege, the wine trails are four marvellous trips through the delicious Stuttgart countryside following the wine paths of the Neckar Valley and Nessenbach. The routes are well signposted and start in the heart of Stuttgart, not far from the central railway station.

Wining & Dining in Stuttgart

A great venue to put your feet up at the end of the day is the Radisson Park Inn Hotel in Stuttgart. This modern establishment in the heart of the city has 181 stylishly appointed rooms with lovely views across the city. Guests can also dine at the RBG Bar & Grill or enjoy a cocktail in the Lounge Bar. During the warm summer months the Stuttgart city centre hotel also has a gorgeous terraced area where you can eat al fresco.

Wine lovers will find that Stuttgart provides an excellent destination full of German promise, full-bodied wine tours and a countryside with a bouquet to rouse the senses.
