Big TV’s Will Kill You

falling furniture house

According to Philly.com and CBSNews, furniture falling on young children and babies has caused an estimated 10,000 injuries and over 60 deaths since 1999.  Now there is a new law, called the Chloe and Samantha law in honour of two girls who were killed when large televisions fell on them, awaiting action by the Senates Commerce Committee, which should help put an end to this falling furniture pandemic by making manufactures provide consumers with written notice about devices that can stop furniture tipping over. WRITTEN NOTICE! How could it not provide a revolutionary change in the way people install their TV’s…

It all seems a bit stupid to me, If these are TV’s or tables that fall over because of manufacturer error then the product should be recalled until it is safe to use. however if people are just putting up there furniture on dodgy surfaces and TV’s stacked on the wrong type of stand a little note wont make the slightest bit of difference to them. The size of TV’s nowadays means they can be dangerous and that is why you should always buy the correct stand or get them fitted by the shop that you got it from, normally you can get this thrown in for free if you ask.

I get annoyed at just how little common sense people seem to have so when I saw this story that there had to be a law invented to help people out with what should just be common sense I just had to speak about it.

I’m sure there are many other examples of laws that shouldn’t be needed because of common sense, if you know of one then get in touch via the comments below to tell me about it!

  1. Well as amused I am about the Law, furniture tipping over is preventable if proper care and maintenance is taken. That’s where I think the main concern should be.

It seems quite a silly idea tipping furniture away – nowadays there are plenty of shops and companies who will recycle them. Or failing that, there’s always the local rubbish tip which is normally completely free and legal to use.
